Biography for R. W. Goetting

R. W. Goetting is a third generation Californian who has lived all of his life in the beautiful central part of the state. He is married to his wife Royanne for 30 years and has two children. The wonderful foothills with their oak trees and creeks, and the pristine beaches of central California provide the sources of inspiration for most of his work.

Largely self-taught over 35 years of painting and study, he has compiled a substantial reference library consisting of a wide range of periods and styles of artists. The painting of J.M.W. Turner, John Constable, Claude Monet and Vincent Van Gogh have influenced his approach to his work. He has studied the work of these masters and others in the galleries and museums of London, Paris and Madrid.

His depiction of nature and light by using layers of color and texture in a free and expressive manner are characteristic of his style. In many of his landscapes and seascapes, Bob likes to take advantage of the low angle directional light of sunrises and sunsets. "Early morning and late afternoon lighting seems to reveal the hidden character of an oak tree or a cliff along the sea. Textures, highlights and shadows take on a quality that is extraordinary and very fleeting. It's an exciting challenge to try to translate this into paint on canvas"
